Lynn Kershaw Oldham GC captain with Andy Earlam
WHEN Lynn Kershaw realised Oldham Golf Club's 125th anniversary coincided with her appointment as lady captain for a second time, she decided straight away that she wanted to organise a very special charity fundraising event.
And so, on Monday, June 19, Lynn and former Oldham professional Andy Earlham - who is now with the Saddleworth club - will be up at the crack of dawn to play at five different local courses in one day!
Lynn explained: "I wanted to do something a bit different, a bit more special, to mark the club's 125th anniversary.
"So, I mentioned this to Andy - who was still at Oldham at the time - and we came up with the idea of going round five courses in a day.
"It's going to be tough, but we're hoping to speed things up slightly by just playing a greensome on each hole at each course, and we hope to get around Saddleworth, Crompton and Royton, Brookdale, Werneth and Oldham by early evening time.
"We're starting at Saddleworth at 4.30 in the morning, but we'll be ready and well prepared for it."
Lynn's chosen charity this year is 'Make A Wish', and they will hopefully benefit to the tune of more than £1,000 thanks to her and Andy's June 19 marathon.
More than £800 has been pledged already.
Lynn was previously the captain at the Lees New Road club in 1999, having initially taken up golf in the late 1980s.
"I used to love playing squash," said Lynn.
"But as I was getting older I thought to myself I'd like to take up a more sedate sport.
"I still love to play at least a couple of times a week. In fact I did two rounds in one day the other week."
Oldham's 125th anniversary celebration week between June 11-18 promises much.
Members at the club will enjoy a junior open, a president's match, the ladies will compete against the GEMS, while a mixed open will follow the day after the Gala Dinner which will take place on Saturday, June 17.
Lynn, who has three sons and five grandchildren, retired from working as a primary school teacher two years ago.
She won the Chronicle Cup competition in 2001.
