NATIONAL TREASURES . . . Oldham Netball Club under-14s
OLDHAM Netball Club are on cloud nine after their under-14s were crowned national champions.
A thoroughly professional display saw the red and blues roar to a 34-21 success over Chester.
The girls started as they meant to go on by turning over the first centre pass. It set the tone for the final.
Millie Marsden (goal keeper) and defensive partner Kasmine Narnor kept the Chester goal attack out of the game, at by the end of the first quarter Oldham had built a 9-5 lead.
Franky Southern, at wing defence, came to the fore in the second quarter as she buzzed about the court.
With the advantage at 19-10, it was Oldham's to lose in the second half.
They did not let go of their grip, however, with Ellie Williams (wing attack) feeding the circle with passes and vision well beyond her years.
Going into the final quarter, Oldham were hungrier than ever for goals and a great intercept from Marsden saw the ball flow fluently down court all the way to goal.
While Berri Neil had another impressive game with 100-per-cent shooting record, goal shooter Alex Martin was player of the tournament with a remarkable 182 out of 188 goals (97-per-cent).
Oldham coach Pam Hazelton said: "It was a fantastic performance in every game by every player, and the shooting stats are world class.
"What more can one ask? I'm delighted."
Oldham raced out of the blocks in game one with a 31-7 victory over Leeds Athletic.
Martin notched a perfect 33 goals from 33 attempts against CFX as Oldham again dominated for a 44-12 triumph.
With Zahra Mirza strong in the centre, Oaksway were then swept aside 39-5.
WRAP UP
Martin again didn't miss as Oldham defeated Yendys 34-13 to wrap up day one on a high.
Day two opened with Oldham beating Team Matrix 33-14.
With a place in the final at stake, a talented Turnford team proved to be Oldham's toughest rivals in the competition.
Each quarter was nip and tuck, before Oldham eventually emerged victorious courtesy of a 25-19 scoreline.
Squad: Alex Martin, Berri Neil, Ellie Williams, Kate Leddy, Frankie Southern , Georgia Southern, Niahm Taylor, Kasmin Narnor , Zahra Mirza, Millie Marsden, Stacey Tankoua, Hannah Diamond.
