LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS . . . Oldham Netball Club, North-West Premier League champions for season 2016-17
OLDHAM Netball Club retained the North-West Premier title in dramatic fashion.
In a nail-biting end to the campaign, Suzy Ashworth's side clinched top honours on goal difference after drawing 42-42 away to Preston outfit Newman.
It was nip-and-tuck all the way as Oldham edged the opening quarter 14-13.
The visitors started the second quarter strongly as Amber Hazelton and Gemma McDermott inspired a three-goals-in-row scoring sequence.
But again the momentum shifted from one team to the other as Newman finished the first half with a 25-24 lead.
With Sarah Brennan on at goal defence, Amelia Hall centre, Lucy Shepherd moving wing attack and Isobel Hallam to goal shooter, Oldham hit back.
The centre court duo of Hall and Shepherd were able to supply the shooters with some great feeds as Oldham won the quarter by four goals for a 35-32 advantage.
Oldham were first on the scoreboard in the final phase of the game - and the season.
However, Newman would not lie down and nosed ahead at 42-41 with only seconds remaining.
Time was virtually up when player-of-the-match Hallam's effort skirted the ring and dropped through the net to claim a thrilling draw and the title from Warrington.
Ashworth said: "It was a very tense game, but we managed to get the draw against a very tough team.
"I am so pleased for the squad. They have had a great season and have worked very hard."
"We hope to take another title in the North-West Championship next week."
Oldham squad: GS C Shepherd, GA Hall, WA A Neild, C EDanson-Chappell, WD A Hazelton, GD G McDermott, GK Z Mallinder, I Hallam, L Shepherd, V Luamba and S Brennan.
