OLDHAM looks as though it may have another young boxing star in the making thanks to the recent successes of Lees-based Michelle Klich.
Hopwood Hall College student Michelle (18) is one of the brightest young prospects fighting out of Stubby's Gym in Shaw, having switched allegiances recently from the Ashton Albion amateur club in Tameside.
She has been boxing for seven years, and is now starting to reap the rewards for her hard work and dedication to training as she has won gold medals at the Eindhoven Box Cup tournament in Holland, and a multi-nations event in Cardiff.
She has also won a bronze medal at the European Championships, where she represented England.
Michelle's mum Brita said: "We're all so proud.
"Michelle has worked so hard over these past seven years and it's been brilliant to see her doing so well.
"To be honest she didn't really fancy boxing at first.
"The first sport she tried was gymnastics, but she was like an elephant in a glass house at that gym.
"She's taken up boxing and clearly has a real talent for it."
Michelle's next outing will be at the Stubby's Gym show next month, after which further championship events and a Three Nations tournament in Holland beckon later in the year.
Ultimately, Michelle has aspirations to reach Olympic level, and then to hopefully go on and win a national title.
However, funding is tight, so if anyone out there feels they may be in a position to help with sponsorship, please call mum Brita on 07706 295315.
