OLDHAM'S sporting heroes will be on parade at The Point, Emirates Old Trafford, tomorrow for the 2016 Greater Manchester Sports Awards.
The awards will see the local winners from across all 10 local authorities come together with a chance of being crowned GM champion in their respective categories.
Oldham's seven hopefuls were chosen during a glittering ceremony at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in July.
STARS
Nicola White, Oldham's Olympic gold medallist, will join other Olympic and Paralympic stars, Kadeena Cox, Claire Cashmore, Bianca Walkden and Callum Skinner, on the night. They will share their experiences, while congratulating the local finalists and winners on their ongoing achievements.
Oldham's representatives -
COACH OF THE YEAR - SUZANNE ASHWORTH
Suzy is a level two netball coach, who coaches at Oldham Netball Club, Netball in the Community and Manchester Thunder Netball Performance League. She has led both the Oldham club and Manchester Thunder NPL squad to titles in their respective leagues. A number of players Suzy coaches have been selected for Manchester Thunder NSL and NPL squads as well as the regional performance programme.
CLUB OF THE YEAR - NORTH EAST MANCHESTER HAWKS HANDBALL CLUB
The club is relatively new, but has grown significantly over the last few years and is the only handball club in the country to have men's and women's teams in the top flight as well as boys and girls under-18s teams. In the last 12 months the club secured promotion to the men's super-eights, finished fourth in the women's super-eights and won the National Cup with both the boys and the girls teams.
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR - CRAIG SIMPSON
Craig is the back bone of Chadderton Park Sports Club, organising everything for the club, from sorting out finances, fund-raising and league fixtures to coach education. He has been instrumental in the development of the club from just a football club to a sports club, which now has a Cerebral Palsy section, plus netball and rounders teams. Craig has turned this football club into an inclusive sports club.
UNSUNG HERO OF THE YEAR - STEVE TYRRELL
Steve started teaching PE at Failsworth in 1979. He joined Oldham Rugby Union Club in 1980, where he has undertaken many roles including player, coach, volunteer, referee and chairman of the junior section. Through organising schoool sport activities from basketball to cross-country, Steve has dedicated many hours to sport each week and has provided opportunities for thousands of young people to get involved in sport.
SPORTS ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR - DANNY WRIGHT
Danny, who recently joined the professional ranks, won the senior amateur national champion at England's boxing Elite Championships. He has also landed the junior ABA's and represented his country on half-a-dozen occasions. While competing for his country, he won three gold medals. Committed Danny dedicates a lot of time to his sport and mentors up and coming young boxers.
DISABLED SPORTS ACHIEVER - ARSLAN SABIR
Arslan started playing blind cricket with Lancashire Lions before progressing to goal ball. He is the club captain and top goal scorer and competes at national level. Arslan has completed his cricket coaching award and has recently started coaching. With his enthusiasm and passion he has become a role model for the whole club and is a credit to himself, his family and the club.
CHANGING LIFESTYLE RECOGNITION AWARD - DAVID WEBB
In December 2013, David was diagnosed with cancer and needed an urgent operation. At the time, David drank and smoked and ignored the fact he was overweight. Following the operation, he lost 7 stone and 12 months later he was referred to the Exercise Referral Scheme and as a result changed his life. Not only does he now do regular physical activity but he also encourages others to do the same.
