Sophie’s the star in junior trials

TABLE TENNIS:
OLDHAM starlet Sophie Newton shone brightly at the Lancashire County Junior trials.
The 12 year old did magnificently to claim fourth place in the under-18s section - but did even better in the under-14s category with a win.
Unison club-mate Alex Darlington (11) was seventh in the boys cadet trials.
Oldham is teeming with young table tennis talent, and Amir Hussain added to list of recent achievements with victory in the under-18s section of the Lancashire County Championships.
He also claimed the Halifax Junior Masters title in the same age group.
IT’S early stages in the Oldham and District Table Tennis League, and Duncan Hadfield was the most successful player in the opening week. He produced two man of the match performances for the Saddleworth ‘B’ and Saddleworth ‘A’ teams against Unison and Honeywell ‘C’ respectively in Division One.
Newcomer Matthew Shaw claimed a hat-trick of victories on debut for Hollinwood ‘A’ in a 6-4 defeat of Werneth ‘A’.
Kyan Chin trebled for Birley Moss in a 6-4 win against Honeywell ‘B’, for whom Ken Hayes bagged a brace.
In week two, Saddleworth’s ‘B’ team managed to overcome their more experienced ‘A’ team by a 7-3 scoreline, with trebles from Paul King and Matt Evans.
