On the hop in race to the top

ATHLETICS: OUR Lady’s and Blue Coat hopped, skipped and jumped to the top of the pile at the Oldham Schools Year Eight indoor athletics tournament.

They won the right to represent the borough at the Greater Manchester Championships on Wednesday, February 9.

Organiser Steve Tyrrell, of Oldham Sports Development, praised the quality on show.

He said: “It was an atmospheric affair, plenty of noise and action, which grabbed my attention straight away.

“I was impressed with the standard throughout the event, and the two successful schools were definitely worthy winners.

“I am sure we have many more enjoyable events to look forward to.”

Our Lady’s won the girls’ category with 66 points, eight ahead of Saddleworth, and 13 clear of third-placed Crompton House.

Blue Coat and Royton & Crompton tied on 39 points, hosts Radclyffe finished on 30, while Hathershaw came seventh with 21.

Blue Coat were best of the boys, leading the way on 43 points, three clear of runners-up Saddleworth.

Crompton House mustered 32 points, Radclyffe 28 and Hathershaw 26.

The youngsters battled it out in a number of events including javelin, long jump, triple jump, sprint, and the popular speed bounce, which sees the participant jump two-footed from side to side over a foam wedge as quickly as possible.
