OLDHAM Schools under-14s suffered a devastating setback to their season when goalkeeper Cameron Mason suffered a suspected broken foot during a 5-1 defeat by Bolton in a challenge game at the Lancaster Club.
Despite enjoying the better of the early exchanges, the town team were rocked when the visitors went ahead in the 11th minute.
Oldham came back strongly and levelled six minutes later through a Dillon Moth (South Chadderton) strike.
But disaster struck on the half-hour mark when Saddleworth pupil Mason bravely came out to smother the ball at the feet of a Bolton player, who accidentally caught his foot.
Play was held up for an ambulance to arrive and when the game resumed Bolton went ahead for a second time.
They scored a third before the break and added two more to their tally after the restart.
The under-14s will be hoping for better luck when they visit Tameside in a Greater Manchester Schools’ League match on Saturday.
Oldham under-15s play host to Tameside at the Lancaster Club on Saturday in another Greater Manchester Schools’ League fixture.
Both matches kick-off at 10.30am.
