Aerospace off to flying start

TABLE TENNIS ROUND-UP
BRITISH Aerospace A signalled their intentions for the new Oldham Table Tennis League first division season with a resounding 10-0 defeat of Hyde YMCA.
And they followed it up with a 7-3 win over Grotton A, for whom Shaun Ellis scored all the points.
Hyde YMCA then lost 7-3 to Hollinwood A despite a tremendous treble for Lionel Royle in a hard-fought match in which Hyde lost the three matches that went to a deciding set. George Jones, Colin Boardman and Kevin Chapman all won two for Hollinwood.
Hollinwood’s B team had a 7-3 success against Honeywell B with Dave Cheetham being undefeated and two wins each from Phil Holmes and Joe Redikin. Tommy Ryan replied with two for Honeywell.
Promoted Werneth C were thrown in at the deep end against defending champions Glodwick and sank 10-0.
The Aerospace B team salvaged a draw against Honeywell A mainly thanks to three from Mick Hill. Simon Hardwick and Dave Buckley scored two each for Honeywell.
Saddleworth narrowly defeated Rosehill 6-4 thanks to trebles from Ian Mclean and Duncan Hadfield.
The second division Hollinwood derby between the F and D teams became a rout with the D team of Andy McNabb, Andy Evans and John Flowers triumphing 10-0.
Hollinwood’s young E team lost 7-3 at home to Hyde B. Steve Hilton won three and Neil Coppard two for the visitors while Andrew Tarpey won two for Hollinwood.
Hyde had also beaten Hollinwood’s C team 6-4 with Steve Hilton again being undefeated and Nathan Buckley, with two, being the main contributor for Hollinwood.
Droylsden struggled against the highflying Unsion A team of Andy Hey, Mike Brierley and Alan Auxilly and lost 9-1 with Miles Benjamin’s defeat of Andy Hey their only success.
Werneth D beat Honeywell D 8-2 with trebles for Mike Pellowe and Richard Hinchcliffe.
Honeywell E narrowly beat St Saviours A 6-4 in the third division, despite Brian Huskinson winning three for the visitors. Terry Cooper and Derek Naylor scored doubles for Honeywell.
Uppermill B continued their good start with an 8-2 defeat of Owls A. Keith Moores and Howard Meadham were undefeated for the ‘Mill.
Unison B and Saddleworth B shared the spoils with Paul Whyatt winning two for Unison and Tony Prescott and Alex Griffiths two each for Saddleworth.
Gilders beat Coldhurst C 7-3 thanks to trebles from Mark Craven and Gerry Lees.
Meanwhile Coldhurst’s D team lost 8-2 to their B team for whom Malcolm Wills trebled.
The Oldham Deaf A team had an 8-2 win over a two-man Unison C team for whom Mike O’Gara scored the points. Pete Dawson was again unbeaten for the Deaf Club.
In division four, Werneth F beat the Deaf Club C team 6-4, with Ron Tench again winning three for the visitors. Colin Pellow, Ashley Murray and John Murray all won two for Werneth.
The Owls B team lost 7-3 at home to Our Lady’s B thanks mainly to three from Matthew Kelly. Previously,
Our Lady’s B had lost 9-1 to Werneth E with Kelly being their only winner. Joe Taylor and Darren Mitzi both scored maximums for Werneth.
Meanwhile, Our Lady’s A team lost 9-1 at home to Honeywell F with Dean Allman’s 12-10 in the fifth over Ronnie Holt being their only success. Tom Loftus and John Rutland were undefeated for Honeywell.
In a match described as being closer than the scores suggest, the Deaf Club B team beat Our Lady’s C 8-2. Mike Briggs continued his unbeaten start to the season while James Chappell won two for Our Lady’s.
Glodwick Academy lost 7-3 at home to St Saviours B team despite Abdul Gufar winning three for the Academy. Josh Poole, Mark Dalton and Tom Dalton all scored two for the visitors.
A strong Coldhurst E team beat the Counthill juniors 10-0 while Werneth’s E team were equally dominant over their G team.
