SADDLEWORTH School Year Nines are setting their sights on the English Schools’ FA Cup.

The teenagers are through to the last 64 in their very first attempt at winning the competition — and coach Adam Cree is delighted with their progress.

They visit Liverpool side Maricourt on Friday, and Cree said: “The football the boys have produced so far is above and beyond 14-year-olds.

“Their passing and movement is superb. They train together at school and some of them are team-mates at other clubs.

“They defeated Stretford High 7-1 in the previous round and they were one of the favourites to win it.”

Stretford, who knocked out Radclyffe in an earlier round of the competition, had no answer to Saddleworth’s slick style of play.

With captain Joe Cooper instrumental in midfield, they had built up a 4-0 lead by the break before going on to dominate the second half.

Jamie Kilburn hit a hat-trick, Ryan Maneely got two, while Laurie England and Tom Thirsk got the others to complete an emphatic scoreline.

OLDHAM Schools under-14s have been drawn at home to Tameside in the quarter-finals of the Greater Manchester Schools’ Talbot Cup.

The boys are on course for a prestigious treble after a superb start to the season.

They are unbeaten in the Greater Manchester Schools’ League and are also through to the last eight of the North-West Woodward Trophy.

Oldham have already beaten Tameside in the league this season, one of three wins and a draw in the competition.

Talbot Cup quarter-final draw is: Oldham v Tameside; Bolton v Manchester; Trafford or Wigan v Salford; Stockport v Bury.

Ties to take place on or before Saturday, January 31, 2009.

Final date awaits five-star Chadderton

CHADDERTON FC Juniors under-15s stormed in the Tameside and District Junior League Cup final with a terrific 5-0 defeat of title rivals Hyde United.

Tom Shaw made it five for Chadds, who face Brendon Bees or Manchester North End in the final.
