Brean double joy for Oldham girls

OLDHAM Netball Club enjoyed a double success in the Pontins Tournament at Brean Sands, winning both the under-11s and under-12s competitions.

It was almost a treble triumph, too - but despite scoring 158 points to 21 across 13 matches in two days, the under-13s missed out after losing 5-2 to Turnford in their final.

The under-12s enjoyed day one success over Barr Beacon (18-0), Hertford (13-2), Finchampstead (10-2), Swan 'B' (14-0), Worcester (13-0), Abbey Flyers 'B' (7-1), Woodley (12-2) and started day two with wins against Yendys (11-0), Saracens (12-2) and Jellies (11-2). They went on to see off Abbey Flyers 'A' 8-0 in the last eight and after beating Tameside 8-1 in the semi-finals, took top honours thanks to a 9-3 success against Eagles.

Ruby Parker starred with an 82-per-cent success rate with 102 goals from 125 attempts and Charlotte Wilkinson was the player of the tournament with 11 turnovers.

The under-13s kicked off on the first day with seven straight wins: Rochdale (7-4), Magnet (17-2), Saracens (16-1), Flames (14-1), Conquerors (18-2), Abbey Flyers (19-0) and Barr Beacon (15-2).

On day two, there were wins over Yendys (11-1), B's (10-0) and Rylands (12-1), before quarter-final and semi-final victories over Hatfield and Breakaways (9-0 and 18-2 respectively) before the final loss.

In the under-11s competition, Oldham enjoyed a comprehensive run of 13 straight wins to take the title. Hertford Hornets 'B' (12-0), Woodley (7-1), Turnford 'B' (12-0), Parkside Newall (8-1), Dreams (21-0), AP Saints (10-1), Flames (18-0), Matrix (9-0), Abbey Flyers 'A' (12-2) and Oldham Eagles (13-4) were seen off initially.

Tameside suffered a 6-3 loss in the last eight and Turnford 'A' were turned over 9-1 in the semi-finals, before Hertford Hornets 'A' were defeated 11-0 in the final.

Lily Lockhead scored 92 of 95 shots (96-per-cent) to finish top shooter.
