Roughyeds get special opening kit

OLDHAM have had permission from the Rugby Football League to make their big entrance into the Kingstone Press Championship with special red jerseys.

The kit will be worn only once — against London Broncos at Bower Fold on Sunday (3pm) — and then put up for auction.

After Sunday, Roughyeds will play in red and white hoops at home and in pink and grey hoops away, but the feeling at the club was that it would be appropriate for players and fans to remember where they had come from while setting out on their journey into the unknown.

Replicas of the red celebration jerseys are on sale. Oldham chairman Chris Hamilton: “It’s only a one-off, and we’ve had to get special dispensation from the RFL to do it.

“For our first game at Championship level we thought it would be nice to do something to remember what a fantastic season we enjoyed last year. We’ll auction the shirts eventually.”

Winger Adam Clay, Roughyeds top try scorer last year with 21, is fit to play after missing the Law Cup win with a groin injury. Craig Briscoe is definitely out with a knee injury and Danny Grimshaw is doubtful.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s big game, Naylor added: “It’s going to be tough for us, because they’re a full-time team and they don’t have anything else to think about outside of rugby.”
