Clay on mend after surgery

WINGER Adam Clay, one of the 21 players contracted to newly-promoted Oldham RL Club for next season's Kingstone Press Championship campaign, is making good progress after an operation on his right ankle.

The former Barrow and North Wales Crusaders back was the Roughyeds’ top try scorer in last season’s League One title triumph with 21 in 23 games – six more than nearest rival and fellow winger Jack Holmes.

He knew midway through the season that he needed minor surgery on the ankle, but he chose to cope with the discomfort and defer the operation until promotion was achieved.

He has since had a surgical clean-up of the joint which included the cutting-out of damaged cartilage.

“The stitches will be coming out this week, but I’ve already done some work on weights in the gym and as far as I can tell at this early stage everything seems to have gone well,” said Clay.

“I see the surgeon again later this week.

“I’m hoping he’s done all he needs to do and that he’ll clear me to start light training.

“So far so good, but I’ll feel happier and more confident once the surgeon has confirmed that all is well and that it’s now just a matter of time and rehab.”

After a full season away from rugby league in order to recharge his batteries, former Oldham centre David Cookson has signed for League One side Rochdale Hornets.
