Label’s launch promises to be electric

MUSIC EXTRA: THE latest and most exciting record label to emerge from the North-West — Playing with Sound — announces itself with a terrific launch night at Manchester’s Night and Day Cafe on Friday.

The label will celebrate its recent formation and introduce what it hopes will be the sounds of tomorrow with a night of new music from the likes of fiery funkadelics No Hot Ashes, cool rock n’ roll four-piece Gold Jacks, and folk-pop duo Hester and Holly Rose.

Dubbed one of Manchester’s top bands to look out for in 2016, No Hot Ashes will be whipping up their heady blend of funk, rock and hip hop. These fellas wear their influences on their sleeves, channeling their idols Nile Rodgers and Johnny Marr into addictively groovy guitar riffs.

ANGLO-Portuguese hopefuls Louie Louie are in action again on Friday in central Manchester.
The band, which features Moorside’s Paul Limer on drums, are supporting Mayflower at Gullivers in the Northern Quarter. Advance tickets £4. See the band’s Facebook page.


A GREAT night was had by all when Milnrow funksters Paintbox Fires packed out the Rebellion Bar in Manchester. Meanwhile, new tune Ghosts is available via a link on the band’s website: www.paintboxfires.co.uk.



OLDHAM favourites Cupids have confirmed their appearance at this year’s Confessional Festival, which takes place at the amazing disused Holy Trinity Church in Mount Pleasant, Blackburn, on April 30.

Local fans will be able to catch Cupids at Gulliver’s in Manchester on April 16. Tickets will be available soon.



Ace tribute rockers ZZ Tops are in town on Saturday for a set at Whittles on King Street. Tickets are now available from the venue or the Whittles Facebook page.

On Friday night, Walkway will hit the stage at Whittles. They are a cracking original rock band who have previously supported Status Quo on tour. Entry is free to that gig.



SATURDAY, February 27, will see a fabulous Christie’s Oldham Live fund-raiser at the Lees Live Lounge, inside the Swan on High Street.

There will be tons of raffle prizes on offer, karaoke and kids’ entertainment (until 8.30pm), as well as sets from great local bands Mojo Rising, the Micradotts, the Fabulous Dilly sisters, Tony Auton, Smack the Monkey and Snakesplay.

Shadow Palace have been invited on August 6th’s hugely popular Party in the Pines festival showpiece by Saddleworth’s former Twisted Wheel front-man Jonny Brown.

In conjunction with Manchester Radio, Brown will be in charge of his own stage in Broughton, Lincolnshire and will play a solo set himself. Manchester outfits the Small Prints and the Backhanders will also play.



A CRACKING weekend is beckoning for one of Oldham’s bands of the moment, 5ft Fez. Matt, Joe and Ross will play at the Live Rooms in Chester on Friday as support for 70s and 80s mod and two-tone favourites The Beat. Tickets from www.theliverooms.com.

Twenty-four hours later 5ft Fez play another one of Drew Stansall’s ever-popular mod-themed Quadrophenia Nights at the Waterside Arts Centre in Sale.
