RECREATION - the band in action
OLDHAM indie outfit The Recreation are growing up fast... and the talented teen four-piece are hoping their impending single “You” reflects that.
The band — frontman Owen Baldwin, guitarist Tom Atkinson, drummer George Porter and bassist Sam Sumner — packed plenty into the last six months of 2015, and they’re keen to take the momentum into the new year.
They self-recorded a four-track EP in the autumn — “Be Nice Or Leave” — and while not as supremely polished as it might have been from a studio production, the release was well received and it has enjoyed some airplay.
Sticks man Porter said: “We dished the CDs out at the end of gigs and generally passed it round really, that’s what the aim was.
“The point wasn’t to storm the charts, we did it ourselves because we just wanted to get the tracks out there. There was a good reception and it was played on a couple of internet radio stations, but again, it was only a rough demo.”
One of “The Rec” gigs that did see plenty of EPs handed out came a month ago when the lads supported tribute aces Noasis at a packed-out Ruby Lounge in Manchester.
“That was a top night,” recalled Baldwin. It was sold out, and I know it wasn’t us that sold all the tickets, but it was mad. We were on second, and it was just great seeing all those faces.
“We played at Mono bar in Chorlton and that was the opposite, it was tiny and very intimate, but it was great too.”
Now attention will very shortly be shifting towards the release of “You”, and the launch night, a headline gig at Manchester’s Club Academy on Friday, January 22.
Recorded at Studio Studio in Whitworth, “You” will present a slightly different sound from The Recreation.
“It’s a bit more mature from us really,” added Porter.
the band has an upcoming gig alongside The Complete Stone Roses at the Ruby Lounge on February 27.
