CLASSICAL tenor . . . Victor Michael
MUSIC EXTRA: THE thought of trying to gain approval and respect from Sir Alex Ferguson would send shivers down the spine of most people.
But for classical tenor singer Victor Michael (34) it proved to be a real “pinch-me” moment – and a performance he’ll never forget.
Victor, raised in New Moston and later a Saddleworth resident, is used to performing his classical crossover sets for some hugely influential and always very appreciative audiences.
He works on cruise ships and theatres around the world - but the show he put on for Manchester United legend Ferguson was a night Victor is fiercely proud of.
“It was a tribute function for Sir Alex at Old Trafford,” said Victor, “the day before the unveiling of his statue after he retire from being manager.
“There were 800 there, from first-team players to the academy lads, and to walk on stage and get the glare from Fergie was quite something. He was great, though.
“I’ve actually performed for him a couple of times, but that one was a bit more full-on, given the significance of the occasion.
“It was a big night for us both, but he is a fan of classical music and swing so that half helped the cause, I guess. It was great in the end.”
Victor, now of Droylsden, began his music career at 17, playing guitar and singing alongside his rock and roll dad. One of his first gigs was at the famous Ritz in Manchester.
After six years Victor went to the Royal Northern College of Music and since then has enjoyed a successful time performing operatic classics.
This year he has already performed on Caribbean cruise ships, in Dubai, Milan and Tuscany and is in the process of releasing his first album, “The Fight of my Life” — of chiefly self-written songs.
“It’s just been great to put some original stuff down really,” he said. “I’ve loved singing the covers from theatre and classical shows, but I don’t think there’s anything like having your own music played back to you. I’m proud of the album and as pleased as anyone can be.”
Victor couldn’t be happier with his musical lot and has even added a purpose-built mini-studio to the side of his house, so he can record his own work and offer a recording service to aspiring singers.
“Having the studio is great,” he said. “I love going in there and recording people — I’m just surrounded by music all the time and that’s perfect.”
