MOSSLEY lad Alex Walker has been taking huge strides towards a dream career in broadcasting during his studies at the University of Sheffield.

Currently working towards securing a maths degree, Walker has also secured the prestigious role of Head of Music at the University station, Forge Radio.

"I'm a regular student, but I just wanted to channel this passion that I've got for music," Walker said.

"Radio became the way to do it."

Walker (21) has been involved with the station for approximately 18 months now, and it began with him and his pal's specialist show every Monday - 'Alex and Benji's Dead Petz' which focused solely on new music.

"I just channelled all my energy into the show, and through doing that I was told to go for Head of Music role, so I went for it."

Now thriving in his new role, Walker is becoming more and more involved at the station.

He added: "It's very much a daily role. Mondays are our flagship day, we have New Music Mondays which is on from 7-8pm, and I still have my original show which runs 8-9pm."

Walker's home city of Manchester is renowned for boasting one of the best music heritages known to man, and he admits that is often something that's hard to find somewhere else.

"Sheffield's music scene really is a fair bit quieter, for a lot of touring bands their port of call will always be London and Manchester, and Leeds gets a lot of attention too," added Walker.

"So Sheffield can sometimes miss out on a lot of those in between bands that have got one album out, but there's still always something on.

"We have a lot of great venues in Sheffield.

"We have the Leadmill which is quite prestigious - the Arctic Monkeys played there on the night they got signed.

"The Sherlocks are probably the most exciting Sheffield band at the moment, they seem to be making a lot of noise."

Walker is clearly also a fan of Mossley lads Cabbage, who have enjoyed enviable success over the past year.

He said: "They're doing a great job, it's nice to see someone so close from home doing so well across the UK.

"They've hit the nail on the head."

Priority

Walker's passion for music spans further than radio as he is also a member of highly-rated indie band Wilson, and although they having been largely inactive since 2015, he insists it's not 'game over'.

"We're currently dormant, but we're still a thing," added Walker.

"We're still writing music, but a lot of it is on the back burner at the moment with university and stuff, which has to take priority."

Although super confident Walker continues to study maths, he admits he is extremely excited by the prospect of a potential career in radio, however.

He added: "That would be the dream, to follow the footsteps of another local lad in Nick Grimshaw. I'd love to do that."
