CAMERON Dummigan only played at Charlton due to the necessity to freshen things up.

Having put in a performance that reminded Athletic of his class, though, it will be difficult for boss Stephen Robinson to leave the right-back out of the side that hosts MK Dons on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Lurgan made his first appearance since signing for Athletic permanently from Burnley in the 1-1 draw at The Valley and consistently linked up well with those players in front of him.

Robinson revealed afterwards that only the nature of the loss against Swindon persuaded him to fast-track Dummigan into the side, with the Northern Ireland under-21 international still finding his way to full fitness.

"We have waited for Cameron to get up to speed with things," said Robinson, who missed Brian Wilson and Lee Croft through illness at Charlton.

"People were calling for him to play - but it has to be right. I would probably have given him another week being honest, but the result last Saturday dictated he played.

'TERRIFIC'

"He was terrific and showed what a good player he is."

Also back playing at Charlton were left-back Jamie Reckord - for the first time since the home draw with Walsall on August 13 - and midfield man Ousmane Fane.

The latter was particularly impressive and after featuring non-stop prior to the suspension he picked up due to a red card against Shrewsbury, Robinson feels that the rest has done the former Kidderminster Harriers player some benefit.

Billy Mckay was another player recalled and he played with energy alongside Freddie Ladapo. Though Athletic missed chances once again, Robinson maintains the tide will turn up front soon.

"At the other side of Cameron, Jamie is still getting his fitness levels back after six weeks out," the manager added. "He will get better and better.

"Ousmane Fane probably just needed a little break from it. The suspension may have been a blessing in disguise.

"The two strikers linked really well and there was everything but the end product. Hopefully, that will come."
