PETER Shirtliff has quit his job at Athletic, only five days after the club had confirmed a role for him ahead of the new season.

The 55-year-old, who had a positive impact last year after being brought in as John Sheridan's assistant, decided to step down for what have been described as "personal reasons".

Shirtliff has been announced as being on board the club's staff late last week, alongside Sean O'Driscoll.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender is set to be replaced among the staff by ex-Motherwell boss Ian Baraclough, who worked alongside Athletic's new manager in Scotland.

"I have had a fantastic time at Oldham and I am sad to be leaving," Shirtliff told Athletic's official website.

"I hope people understand that this is not a football related decision but a consequence of a personal matter.

"I have the upmost respect for the club, fans and the board and will no doubt be a regular visitor next season and I certainly would not rule out a return at some point in the future."

Athletic thanked Shirtliff for his work and wished him well for the future.
