Shez confirmed as Notts County boss

NOTTS County have confirmed the appointment of John Sheridan as their new manager.

The former Athletic boss was unveiled by the Sky Bet League Two club in an announcement this afternoon.

In a statement, Athletic said they had rejected “out of hand” several approaches from the Meadow Lane club, before granting permission for talks when Sheridan stated that was his wish.

And they stressed that the scenario was neither “wanted or envisaged”.

“Of course the club are devastated to be losing John, especially after the magnificent job he did for us last year but at the same time it our policy, as always has been, not to stand in a player or manager’s way if they feel better opportunities lie elsewhere,” read the statement.

Athletic chairman Simon Corney said: “It is particularly tough for me as John is not only a good manager but also a good friend.

“There are several reasons behind this move and not all will be apparent to everyone, but John goes with my blessing and eternal thanks for his tremendous effort in keeping us in Division One last season.”

It leaves Athletic, who were guided to safety by Sheridan after he picked up nine wins in 22 games on his return as manager, hunting down a sixth boss in the space of only 15 months.

Sheridan said: “I’m delighted to be joining Notts County and relishing the opportunity to get the club challenging for promotion to League One.

“The decision to leave Oldham was not an easy one and I will always retain my affection for the club and its fans."
