ATHLETIC manager John Sheridan saluted the efforts of his players as Crewe were beaten 1-0 thanks to Jonathan Forte's goal that ensured the club's presence in League One for next season.
He said: "It is a great achievement from the players are they are the ones who need all the praise.
"They were in a sticky period and it did look doubtful. Since I have come in, they have responded really well. They deserve the credit for driving on and forgetting about what had gone on before.
"Every manager is different and they have responded to me. I couldn't have asked for any more.
"We didn't play well here. We have had some tough games leading up to this one.
"Deep down, I thought we were already safe, but I was never going to say that.
"The players ground out a result and we are decent at keeping clean sheets."
Crewe boss Steve Davis, whose side were already relegated before the game, was encouraged by an enterprising display from his young team.
He said: "When we play like that, it gives you a lot of hope.
"With some good additions, we will be fine next season.
"We were the better team and controlled good portions of the game and made chances.
"But it's about what you do in the final third. "We were excellent, but their
goalkeeper had a magnificent game.
“He made two great saves in the first half and somehow plucked one out of the top
corner from Brad Inman which I thought was going in.”
