Forte’s knocks are in the past

JONATHAN Forte believes he is over the problems that have restricted him this season - and hopes to continue being a major player for Athletic.

Last season's 15-goal top scorer has had a frustrating 2016. A summer move to Barnsley broke down and though he scored as a substitute in the opening day 1-1 draw at Walsall, a red card for violent conduct against Bradford was out of character and hinted at a player not quite at peace with the world.

In late September, then-manager David Dunn said Forte had personally requested an operation to cure a knee complaint that had troubled him for months.

Now Forte is back to his best. Excellent in pushing back Swindon time and again earlier this month in the 2-0 home win, the former Sheffield United and Southampton forward followed that up with

terrific work in setting up the match-winning goal for Curtis Main a game later against Walsall.

Though Sheridan tried to keep him in reserve at Oakwell this week, early injuries saw the 29 year old thrust into the action in the first half.

Forte, who is set to start in tomorrow's big game at Fleetwood, insists he would never ask to be given a breather on the substitutes' bench.

"I want to play in every game," he said. "But it is the gaffer's decision and with games on Saturday and Tuesday, he made the decision to rest me."

He says he is happy to stay on with Athletic if a deal can be reached: "I’m disappointed with the season but my injuries are over now and I can get on with my career," he said. "I enjoy it here, so it is down to the manager and the board."

Another pair of victories, starting tomorrow, will surely put Athletic out of relegation worries.

"We have five games left. If we can get another two wins we will be safe," Forte said. "Fleetwood are right next to us and if we beat them then it puts them further into trouble and would give us a lot more confidence. It is a six-pointer: if we can get that win, happy days."
