We believe, says Wilson

DESCRIBED by his manager as a ‘steady Eddie’ who can operate in various roles, Brian Wilson is happy to do his bit quietly and without a fuss.

The 32-year-old defender played as a makeshift left-back during the 1-0 win over Blackpool this week.

Operating in a position that has been a problem for John Sheridan since Daniel Lafferty’s loan ended, the right-footed Wilson was steady enough in his third start under the current manager.

“It is difficult playing left-back, as it is not predominantly my position,” said Wilson, who ended on the winning side for the first time under Sheridan.

“I felt I defended well, though I could be a lot better on the ball. It was a good result, though, and that is all that really matters.”

The derided pitch at SportsDirect.com Park — which has been seeded this week — is tough on the players’ legs, Wilson admits, and has an effect on tactics and on post-match recovery.

“It is hard, but the same for whoever comes and plays here,” added the former Bristol City and Colchester player. “Both sides have to deal with it. We have played a little longer in games, as we need results more than anything. If you look at our squad you can see that we like to play on the floor, but it is difficult on there. It’s quite heavy on the legs as well.”

Rochdale enter tomorrow’s game in rich form, having won four out of their last five.
