Sheridan aims to stretch unbeaten run

ATHLETIC manager John Sheridan is hoping to shake off the frustration of losing another fixture to the elements by extending the current unbeaten run at Sheffield United.

The home clash with Swindon was called off last week due to snow and ice on the Oldham pitch, which has meant a 10-day break without a fixture for an Athletic side unbeaten since January 23.

Sheridan’s focus has been on keeping his men fit and ready for the Bramall Lane game as he bids to take the run without defeat to eight league games.

“Obviously we all would have liked to have played and kept our little run going,” said Sheridan. “It was a big game. But though we were disappointed, there’s nothing to do about it.

“It’s now down to everybody to try to stay fit for the Sheffield game. All the focus is on that one now.

“We’ve not changed any preparation plans. The weather hasn’t been too bad so we’ve been able to get out on the training ground. Everybody’s been working hard; if we keep everyone fit that will give us the best chance of getting a result.”

One player who won’t be ready for Sheffield is injured striker Dominic Poleon. The former Blades loan man has been out of action since a leg injury at Shrewsbury in late January.

"Dom’s still two weeks away from full fitness, and even then he’ll need a bit of game time, I would think,” Sheridan added.

Sheridan hopes to have a new left-back for the trip to Bramall Lane. Danny Lafferty’s return to Burnley following the end of his loan has left a hole Athletic’s boss wants to fill with a left-footer to rival Joseph Mills.

One player who could be targeted is Wigan left-back Andy Kellett. The 22 year old was a favourite of Sheridan’s when they worked together during a loan with Plymouth last season.
