A LATE equaliser by Kyle Wootton denied Athletic a three-point haul at Glanford Park.

The Iron substitute volleyed home in the 88th minute after a defensive mix-up saw Timothee Dieng flick a header out when Joel Coleman appeared to have the cross covered.

Daniel Lafferty had struck earlier as Athletic aimed to make it three wins in a row.

The on-loan Burnley left-back finished neatly with his left foot after a pull-back from Matt Palmer in the 78th minute.

John Sheridan's side were not at their best and were thankful for a string of saves from Coleman at Glanford Park.

The first half was a dour affair, with the only real chances falling to the home side.

Carl Winchester fired a first-time shot wide from long range before Coleman saved well from a Conor Townsend free-kick.

Paddy Madden then headed against the crossbar from a corner that fell in his path and the same player tested Coleman's reflexes again after the hour.

Townsend forced a one-handed stop from Coleman before Lafferty struck and Greg Luer wasted as chance to level with a header he directed over the bar, before Wootton's intervention.
