LIAM Kelly's second-half penalty made it back-to-back wins for Athletic after another rousing showing.
Matt Palmer was tripped in the box in the 73rd minute and the skipper struck his spot-kick beyond Ben Alnwick, the goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball but unable to divert it over the top.
Athletic had in the first half suffered the blow of losing a lead due to a mistake from Joel Coleman. He allowed a Marcus Maddison cross to beat him in the flight, turning the ball onto the underside of the crossbar with Souleymane Coulibaly following up with his head from close range after 39 minutes.
John Sheridan's side took a lead in the contest after only two minutes when Cameron Dummigan pounced on a defensive error to blast home clinically with his left foot.
Now five games unbeaten after a deserved three points at London Road, the once prohibitive gap to the League One safety line is now down to one point.
