Latics on Main road to safety

Athletic supporters hope Curtis Main, who wants to start against Gillingham tomorrow, can find the net time and time again between now and early May to lift the club away from danger.

“I’ll work hard and chances will come, I’m sure,” said Main, who made his debut for the club as a second-half substitute at Blackpool.

“Watching the lads play on Tuesday, there were a lot of opportunities created and if they keep playing like that then those chances will continue to come as well. Hopefully, I’ll be able to make them count.”

Main has scored once in 14 games for Rovers this season; ten time last season.

he almost scored seven minutes into his Athletic career at Bloomfield Road, but headed over the bar.

“I had just come on and had half a chance that came out of nowhere, really,” Main said. “Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to put it into the back of the net — but hopefully I can do that tomorrow.”

A former trainee at Darlington, Main made his first-team debut at the age of 15 in 2008 — the youngest player ever to represent the club.

“I feel I need to play games,” he added. “It’s been a frustrating season and that’s part of the reason I’m here — to play and do well.

“Doncaster played Gillingham quite recently, so I know what they’re about and what to expect tomorrow.

“Goals win games, so we’ll basically have to put the ball in the back of the net — that is what we are going out to do.”

Main enjoyed the atmosphere generated by Athletic’s travelling support at Blackpool.

“The fans were brilliant,” he said. “It was quite surprising being away in midweek to Blackpool when the weather wasn’t the greatest.”
