Mellon’s dealings bearing fruit

SHREWSBURY’S frantic activity in the player market could draw to a close this week with the loan signing of Crystal Palace flyer Sullay Kaikai.

The lively winger has been targeted by Shrews boss Mickey Mellon as the final piece of his jigsaw as he attempts to build a squad capable of climbing out of danger — and out of reach of competitors, including Athletic.

“We would love to bring him back because he’s got pace and he dents back fours,” said Mellon of Kaikai, who in a previous loan spell at the club scored five times in 15 games.

“We’ll see. I hope so. It’s our last loan and we have a number of targets we may go for, but we want to get it right.”

Though Mellon doesn’t expect a deal to go through before Athletic’s visit tonight, Shrewsbury have already made 15 deals during the current window — including that of former Athletic man Richie Wellens.

The 35 year old who signed for Mellon’s side on an 18-month contract, was arguably the stand-out performer as Shrewsbury upset the form book by beating Burton 2-1 on their own patch at the weekend.
