STEVE Morison's late header against the run of play earned Millwall three points.
The Lions had taken an early lead through a Lee Gregory goal but Athletic fought back well, levelling through Mike Jones and looking to push on and win the game themselves.
Morison headed home, though, increasing the club's plight in the relegation zone.
Millwall took the lead after only 81 seconds. Jed Wallace got in down the right and from his pull-back, Shane Ferguson's initial shot was well-saved low down by Joel Coleman only for Gregory to poke into an empty net from close range.
Athletic regrouped well and Carl Winchester forced David Forde into a save with his legs after good work by Dominic Poleon.
Millwall went close to a second from a corner that was headed across goal by Mark Beevers, with Gregory forcing a very good stop by Coleman and Morison's follow-up effort blocked on the line.
Jones went close with a free-kick at the other end while Rhys Murphy's turn and shot saw the ball deflect not far wide of goal.
Ferguson hit the outside of a post after a race from halfway but Athletic continued to press and found their equaliser on 58 minutes. Jones won the free-kick initially and struck home impressively from just outside the area.
Substitute Jonathan Forte almost caught Forde out with a cross he tipped over and the Lions 'keeper had to be alert to stop Winchester's 25-yard drive heading in.
But though all the pressing was Athletic's, Millwall netted a winner on 85 minutes when a superb cross from Ferguson was neatly headed home by a stooping Morison.
