Strike while iron is hot

FULLY fit and bursting with confidence ahead of tomorrow’s home showdown with Millwall, Rhys Murphy carries the swagger of a natural born goal scorer.

Not since Chris Porter nine years ago has Athletic boasted a striker who has managed to burst through the 20-a-season barrier.

At present few would back against him managing the trick before the campaign’s end. Granted, nine of his 12 so far came in a loan to Crawley, but if he continues and helps a rise out of the bottom four, there will be few statistical quibbles from Athletic fans.

The man thought to be a flop only four months ago when he was farmed out to the bottom division, has shown just how quickly perceptions can be turned round.

“Confidence is a massive part of the game and when the goals are going in, you look forward to every game,” said the former Dagenham and Redbridge ace, who cost Athletic only £20,000.

“Last year it was hard, coming in with no form and no fitness, and I struggled. This year, I’m doing well and long may it continue. I look forward to every game.”
