SHEFFIELD UTD 1, ATHLETIC 0

MATT Done's goal early in the second half put paid to Athletic's FA Cup involvement.

The ex-Rochdale man netted after 47 minutes in a close-fought game.

And though the home side went down to 10 men in the second half, David Dunn's side couldn't eke out an equaliser.

The home side almost opened the scoring inside the first minute. Done found room inside the penalty area to fire an angled drive low towards the corner, only for David Cornell to push the ball out superbly with an outstretched left arm.

On 13 minutes, Athletic struck the woodwork. Mark Yeates shaped in a free-kick from the right and Danny Philliskirk got across his man at the near post, his shot taking a slight deflection on its way onto the face of a post.

Blustery conditions spoiled the contest, but Athletic gave as good as they got in the opening 45 minutes.

The Blades went ahead on 47 minutes. Neill Collins played a pass into the feet of Done, who spun past Brian Wilson and as the ball ricocheted between the pair, he reacted quickest to fire past Cornell.

Mike Jones forced a save from George Long just after the hour, when the goalkeeper got a punch to a cross as Jake Cassidy challenged him. The shot was a little too close to him, though.

Adams was then sent off for a shove in the face of Liam Kelly.

Athletic pressed hard for a leveller and Cassidy almost got it heading into the turf and over from a swinging Joseph Mills cross.

Dominic Poleon appeared to be grabbed to the floor by Long in the closing stages, but referee Eddie Ilderton was unmoved.

John Brayford crashed a shot onto the underside of the crossbar as the home side made it into the next stage.
