Renshaw earns rich praise from Philliskirk

CHRIS Renshaw had been lauded by his mentor Tony Philliskirk, after the goalkeeper took a place on the senior bench for the first time at Mansfield.

In impressive form for the club’s under-18s side this season, the teenager was called up as a result of David Cornell’s hand injury, which led to Joel Coleman going between the posts at Field Mill.

Philliskirk said that the promotion was fully justified, given Renshaw’s development.

“I’m very proud of Chris and he deserved it,” said Philliskirk, whose side lost 1-0 at home to Scunthorpe on Saturday.

“He has had a smashing season and look at his performance in the Youth Cup last week (the 3-2 win over Chester).

“It’s no argument he was our best and most important player and the saves he made ensured we went through to the next round.”

Renshaw joined Coleman, Danny Philliskirk, Carl Winchester and Danny Byrnes in the match day squad for the FA Cup tie at Mansfield as players who have come up through the ranks with Athletic.
