Mike Jones:. the Athletic midfield man is in the running for a North-West player of the year award.
ATHLETIC say they offer fans “good value for money” following a survey into costs for supporters at leagie clubs.
The ‘Price of Football’ study by BBC Sport puts Athletic as the sixth-most expensive side to follow in Sky Bet League One in terms of season tickets.
But the club points to bargain £10 season tickets for juniors, which weren’t taken into account in the survey. And Athletic, mainly mid-table in the rest of the categories, also point to the cost of both junior and adult shirts bearing comparison with the rest of the clubs in League One.
“Surveys like this take a standard measure across all clubs,” said Athletic’s commercial director, Mark Moisley. “As a club we offer a special £10 season ticket for juniors — which works out at less than 50p a game.
“We believe that we offer good value for money. Matchday tickets have not increased in price and the cost of a kit is very favourable. We think we are very competitive.”
Athletic’s cheapest season ticket for 2015-16 was £325 — frozen from the previous season. Only five clubs In the division had a more expensive base rate: Millwall, Southend (both £333), Chesterfield, Port Vale and Swindon (all £345). The cheapest season ticket was at Bradford (£149), ahead of Fleetwood (£209.50).
In terms of kit cost, only four clubs had cheaper junior shirts than Athletic’s, which is £29.99. No rivals could better the £39.99 for an adult shirt.
Match day prices at for nine other clubs are cheaper than Athletic’s cheapest rate (£20), but the most expensive Oldham matchday ticket is only two pounds more, with only Coventry cheaper (£20).
Athletic are expected to confirm the signing of experienced striker Ricardo Fuller today on a short-term deal.
The 36-year-old Jamaican spent last season in the second tier at Millwall where he scored six goals in 40 Games.
The former Preston and Stoke striker has impressed manager David Dunn on trial with Athletic.
Fuller will add firepower to a squad missing ineligible Michael Higdon at Sheffield on Saturday.
MIKE Jones is Athletic’s candidate for the player of the year gong in next month’s MBNA North-West Football Awards. Jones is up against Ben Garratt (Crewe), Chris Maxwell (Fleetwood), Paul Huntington (Preston) and Ian Henderson (Rochdale) for the prize on November 16.
