Boss aiming to lift fans’ mood

DAVID Dunn has promised to attack his new full-time job with gusto to transform the mood of fed-up Athletic fans.

Describing himself as a winner, the former Blackburn and Birmingham player, once transferred for £5.5 million, wants to put a smile back on the faces of the faithful — starting with the visit of Scunthorpe tomorrow.

“It is a really good opportunity to get my teeth into and I am really excited to get Oldham up the league,” Dunn said.

“I’m a winner. Speaking to quite a few fans, they have become fed up with life at the club over the years. I want to give them something to be happy about.

“I’m a strong believer that every community needs a football club and this one is no different. If everyone works together I have no doubt we can be successful.”

Dunn’s new regime is said to have had an effect in laying on effective, high-intensity training sessions.

More responsibility has been handed to his well-regarded assistant Dean Holden, while new first-team coach Keith Brown has been introduced as chief taskmaster at Chapel Road.

“I knew that even when I was playing, Dean needed to be allowed to do more and now he is,” said Dunn.

“Keith is also someone I know well. He brings the enthusiasm and work ethic that is so important.”

Athletic’s manager made a point of highlighting the role played by midfield man Danny Philliskirk during his four games as manager.

Philliskirk has played in every position other than defence this season, and after returning to the team at Gillingham took on three briefs in the 90 minutes: support for target man Michael Higdon, then on the right when Dominic Poleon moved up front, and later over to the left.

“All of the players have done really well for me, but one who stands out for his attitude, particularly after being left out at Port Vale, is Danny,” Dunn said.

“He gets played in every position and always does a job and never whinges. You can trust him on the pitch and what’s more, he is a very good footballer.”

Dunn is keeping his cards close whether he will play this weekend - but he promises his playing days aren’t over since he was appointed manager.

Ricardo Fuller and Fabien Brandy continue to train with Athletic and Dunn wants to see more of them before taking a final decision on whether to offer the pair contracts.



The club hopes to have the main seating deck, concourse bars and new club shop in the North Stand open for the home game against Sheffield United on October 17.
