AT THE HELM . . . David Dunn has been handed the Athletic managerial reins on a permanent basis.
DESCRIBED by his chairman as a “revelation”, new full-time Athletic boss David Dunn has also been handed the backing of one of his most trusted lieutenants.
Simon Corney flew in from the USA this week to confirm the naming of Dunn (35) as manager after an unbeaten four-game run as interim boss.
The Blackburn Rovers legend was earmarked by Corney as a potential full-time manager as soon as he took over in the top job at SportsDirect.com Park following the sacking of Darren Kelly nine games into his first season in charge.
Danny Philliskirk says the players are revelling Dunn’s management, with a fresh sense of purpose that has brought four draws and the promise of better results to come.
“The gaffer is a real football man and he wants us to play,” said Philliskirk. “We are all working hard for him and wanted him to get the job full-time. His philosophy is good and we have all been doing our best for him.”
After concentrating on creating a solid base, Dunn is now focusing on a more expansive form of play to make the most of loan player Michael Higdon and fellow striker Dominic Poleon.
“Higgy has experience and is scoring goals, and Dom is on fire,” Philliskirk said. “When we play with confidence, we can hurt anyone.”
The terms of Dunn’s contract aren’t yet clear. The club didn’t make a full announcement of the appointment, though chairman Corney has detailed his belief in his chosen man.
“He has been a revelation since he has been here,” Corney said. “He has great ideas and it is a very
exciting time for the club.
“David came first and foremost as a player and right away, you could see the impact and influence he had in the dressing room. From day one I knew he would become our manager full-time.”
Dunn himself has spoken of his pride in his role: “I’m delighted for the opportunity,” he said. “It is something I am really proud of.
“There is still the possibility of me playing. I had a little run-out for the reserves this week, so it is something I have certainly not given up on.”
