ATHLETIC are optimistic about their chances of landing ex-Swansea goalkeeper David Cornell.

It is believed a deal is close to bringing the 24-year-old free agent to Oldham despite interest from league rivals Crewe.

Manager Darren Kelly has been on the hunt for a goalkeeper with first-team experience to rival young number one Joel Coleman. Under-21 international Cornell is seen as a suitable candidate to get the best out of Coleman and vice versa.

Crewe had been keen on taking Cornell as back-up to promising young goalkeeper Ben Garratt, but it is understood Athletic are in pole position to land a player whose sole Swans appearance came in a League Cup tie against Scunthorpe six years ago.

BRISTOL Rovers has signed winger Cristian Montano as manager Darrell Clarke declared his intention to give the player a second chance.

Montano (23) had been playing in Colombia after being sacked by Athletic in December 2013, following which the Crown Prosecution Service dropped an investigation into alleged spot fixing.

Montano denied such involvement and stated his intention to sue Athletic. Athletic said the decision was on disciplinary grounds, unconnected to legal proceedings.

“I know he’s desperate for another opportunity to play league football and I’m a firm believer in giving everyone a second chance,” said Clarke
