MIKE Newton has stepped down as a director at Athletic for a second time.

The New York-based trader (42) returned to work alongside chairman Simon Corney a year ago, after

originally resigning from his role on the board at the end of the 2009-10 season.

Newton’s departure leaves Corney, Ian Hill and Trust Oldham chair Barry Owen as directors at Boundary Park. He says further changes are likely.

“Simon wants to restructure the board with a view to the future direction of the club and to that end I offered to step down,” Newton said.

“I have a lot of respect for Simon. He is a deep personal friend and I hope everything works out well for him at the club.

“I have enjoyed my time at Oldham and wish the fans well. I have put in a meaningful amount of money and will not be taking anything out. It will be written off as a donation.

“Contrary to what some may think, I am not looking to buy Port Vale FC, though I want to remain in

football in some capacity.

“I would be happy to serve on a board again if I felt I could make a contribution and it was the right opportunity.”

Corney paid tribute to the contribution of Newton to the cause: “Mike has been instrumental in helping to shape various aspects of the club,” he said.

“Due to the day-to-day commitments he has in New York, he hasn’t been able to get across so often. But when he has been here, he has provided useful insight.”
