Latics keep faith with Furman

ATHLETIC have taken on captain Dean Furman for another season.

The midfielder, who made his 100th league appearance for the club at Wycombe, was on a three-year contract which was due to expire in the summer.

And with the player turning 25 before the end of June, he could have walked out of the club on a free transfer had the club not acted.

Now, with Athletic exercising their built-in option to extend Furman’s deal for a further 12 months, the former Glasgow Rangers and Chelsea man has become the 10th professional on the books for next season.

Arguably, he is also the most important among that group.

The man with the captain’s armband is a pivotal figure in midfield. The start of Athletic’s dramatic decline in fortunes in the second half of the season can arguably be traced back to his two-and-a-half month absence with a knee injury, sustained at Huddersfield in mid-January.

Furman has so far made 111 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals, after Dave Penney signed him from Rangers for a fee rising to around £50,000.
