Tribute to a ‘model professional’

ATHLETIC chief executive Alan Hardy paid tribute to Richard Butcher, who has died at the age of 29.

The Macclesfield Town midfielder passed away at his home in Manchester. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Northampton-born Butcher played for Athletic in the 2005-06 season after signing from Lincoln City.

“I couldn’t believe the news when I heard it,” Hardy said.

“He was such a likeable young man and obviously a fit lad.

“I remember from his time here that he was very much the model professional.

“He was well-liked by all the staff and all his team-mates. It is so tragic that his death has come at such an early age.”

Macclesfield chairman Mike Rance said: “We are all absolutely devastated by Richard’s death.

“He was probably the best professional at the club and his conduct and professionalism were always exemplary.

“Richard was an intelligent,

articulate and thoroughly likeable young man who will be very sadly missed by his team-mates, friends and family.”

The death of Butcher, who married in August, comes 10 months after Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander died, aged 53.

A minute’s silence will be held in memory of Butcher at tonight’s game between Athletic and Southampton at Boundary Park.
