JOHN Sheridan paid tribute to his side's determination after the 1-0 win over Gillingham:

"The result was the most important thing and the three points.

"Credit to the players. It is always difficult when you are down at the bottom and haven't won or scored for a long time.

"I only came in on Friday, so they will get used to me and how I want to play.

"There was a lot of endeavour and desire to get over the line.

"The goal was a great one and you don't always need to make 15 passes to score.

"When you get the advantage in a game it gives you something to hold on to.

"You could see that in our defending.

"People were telling me Josh Law has that in his locker and he strikes a lovely ball. It is very important to have that in your team as set-plays can win you games.

"I didn't feel we were really in danger.

"We gave away silly free-kicks in the first half and the long throw dropped a couple of times to give them opportunities.

"But from open play we worked hard and had a good shape, defending well.

"Connor Ripley was composed in goal and Peter Clarke was outstanding.

'DISTRIBUTION'

"Ousmane Fane reminds me a bit of Carlton Palmer who I played with. He gets around the pitch and sometimes if he wants to run and run you have to let them do it if it's their strength.

"His passing and distribution could be better, but if he had that he wouldn't be here.

"Results elsewhere haven't been great, but three points was the most important thing."

NEW Gillingham boss Ady Pennock was not impressed with his team's efforts in the day:

"The first half was not good enough. It was unbelievably poor. The second half was better, but in all honesty it couldn't have been any worse.

"It was like Oldham had men on the pitch and we didn't. This is a difficult place to come and you have to roll your sleeves up.

"We have to work hard, with 20 games to go and hopefully, this won't happen again because we have tough matches coming up.

"We did make a couple of chances in the first half and their goalkeeper made one or two good saves.

"But we have got to create more from open play.

"I am not going to hide away from it, because I'm a supporter here as well."
