FORMER Athletic central defender Paul Futcher has died at the age of 60.
Former England under-21 international Futcher began his distinguished playing career with home-town club Chester City, before going on to make a name for himself at Luton Town between 1974-78.
His impressive form earned a high-profile £350,000 move to Manchester City in the summer of 1978, but after just one season and 37 appearances for the Maine Road giants, he moved to Athletic in return for a fee of £150,000.
In three years he went on to make 98 appearances for Athletic under Jimmy Frizzell, scoring one goal.
He moved to Derby County in 1982, before later in his career going on to secure legendary status at both Barnsley and Grimsby Town.
He managed several non-league clubs after retiring, most notably Southport, Stalybridge Celtic and Ashton United.
His twin brother Ron enjoyed a successful playing career, as did his son Ben, who played for Lincoln City. Ben was on the coaching staff at Bury until Dave Flitcroft was sacked last week.
A statement on the Athletic website said: "We are saddened to hear of the passing to former defender Paul Futcher, aged 60.
"Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."
