'The Tiffany Windows and Joseph Briggs' - an illustrated talk by Douglas Jackson.
A hybrid meeting in the Performance Space and on zoom.
Douglas Jackson, a journalist and writer, has made several visits to America to research the life of Joseph Briggs, and has produced a book on his work.
Surprisingly, Europe’s biggest collection of classic American art glass by Tiffany is in Accrington! It’s there thanks to a local man called Joseph Briggs, who joined the Tiffany company in New York in 1893, rose to be boss, and sent the collection back to England in the 1930s.
Douglas's latest talk for us is about Tiffany stained-glass windows, in which Joseph Briggs specialised. The company produced over 5,000 windows and sold them all over the world. While only six came to Britain, they are all linked to a fascinating series of events, and of people both famous and infamous.
