SHOPPERS and traders in Shaw gave a resounding thumbs up to the new market, which has moved to the main street for a trial period.
Stalls will adorn Market Street from 9am-4pm for the next nine Thursdays before a decision is made on whether to make the move permanent.
Reactions were mixed when the news was announced, with businesses worried about the decline in traffic if street was closed in market days
Sue Meredith, from Dobcross, usually visits Uppermill Market on Wednesdays but had come to meet friends: “I have been to the old Shaw Market and I thought it was tatty and in dire need of a makeover,” she said. “Everything was wrong about it. It never looked busy and there was litter everywhere.
“This new location seems to be bustling and it looks more inviting. There is a buzz about the place and it’s an enjoyable shopping experience.”
Michael Jackson’s family have had a fisheries stall on the market for the past 30 years. He said: “I have my regular customers who always came to the old location but here, I seem to be getting passing trade as well as the regulars. It looks busier. The old market was getting a bit tired and I’m all for change.”
Steve Foster brought his Daisy Textiles stall to Shaw from Liverpool for the first time yesterday.
He said: “There’s plenty going on. I’ve had a great response and I think I’ll do well here.”
