PEOPLE power triumphed last night as a controversial proposal at a National Grid site was unanimously rejected by councillors.
As reported on Tuesday, Mersey Road residents in Failsworth were concerned about National Grid’s plan to create a new access point, the demolition of seven redundant buildings and the creation of a new office and warehouse. The main objection was to new access: the site owneer wanted to move it on to a blind bend.
People objected to the proposals, citing traffic concerns and noise disruptions. Some had suggested making a new access around the back, in Albert Street. A local petition gathered 62 names.
Ward councillor and council leader Jim McMahon said: “It isn’t fully appreciated how close the entrance is to Oldham Road. National Grid is an important employer; we want to make sure they are supported because they provide local jobs. But we have to draw a line somewhere. It’s not appropriate.”
