Left-wing Labour leadership candidate Jeremy Corbyn has the right ideas to offer an alternative to Tory austerity says Oldham West and Royton MP Michael Meacher.

He described the leadership hopeful as having “conviction, principle, integrity and authenticity” as well as offering the radical change needed.

Mr Meacher said: “Politics is about principles and values — what are you doing it for and who will benefit. The Labour Party is different from the Tory party and Jeremy is really showing the differences. He’s more than a breath of fresh air, it is like a tornado. We have got to reduce the deficit, of course we have — we cannot just keep spending money. But it is about how you do that. It is about growing the economy not contracting it.

“We want people in decent jobs, not zero-hour contracts or self-employed and struggling to make a living, simply to manipulate the employment figures.”

If polls are to be believed, Mr Corbyn will be announced leader of the Labour Party on September 12, with pollsters claiming he has more than 50 per cent of the first-choice votes.
