Joseph Littlewood: 100 today

HALF of Oldham’s oldest couple turns 100 today - and is determined to make the most of life.

When his wife Sally died in February after 75 years of marriage, Joseph Littlewood had to change his life. He still lives independently at Bickerton Court, with help from Safehands Support - and has decided to become more active in the community, to keep busy!

“I’m trying to be more involved. I go to Oldham Sports Centre once a week to an Age UK exercise class, and once a week to Morrisons to do my shopping. I also attend a weekly exercise class and a coffee morning at Bickerton Court. I like to go out for a drive in the car with my family and take a little walk about. I also enjoy going out for a meal too.

“I’m in good health, I’ve never smoked and have the odd glass of beer or cider. I’m well known for my appetite and always clear the plate.”

Joseph, who came from a wealthy family in Chadderton, was general manager at the Bee family finance company in Retiro Street, Oldham, where he worked full-time for 53 years until he was 70... then part-time until he was 90.

He met Sally at the Castle dance club in Oldham when they were 17 and they were separated only once during their 81-year relationship, when he was called up in World War II.

The soulmates married at Corpus Christi Church after a six-year courtship, and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last June.

Joseph will celebrate his landmark birthday with a party for his family and friends, including daughter Wyn Brady (68), son Terence Littlewood (67), grandson Nathan (30) and great-granddaughter Molly Grace (3).
