Minibus boss in hit-run horror

A HAVE-A-GO hero transport chief is in hospital with a brain injury and severe arm injuries after a yob ran over him as he stole one of the firm’s minibuses.

Royton Minibuses boss David Birley (72) was driving along Salmon Fields early on Saturday afternoon when he spotted one of his fleet being driven by someone he didn’t recognise.

Mr Birley turn round and stopped his car in front of the unknown driver. The thief, believed to have stolen the minibus from the depot moments earlier, got out pushed Mr Birley to the ground, knocking him unconscious, before allegedly running over Mr Birley’s left arm and driving off.

David’s wife Catherine said: “I’m really shocked. David is still really confused. We have decided it is best not to discuss the business with him for now. It’s been a real struggle — we still can’t believe what has happened.”

Mr Birley was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital with injuries including torn arm ligaments and a blood clot to his brain. He has since been moved to Salford Royal Hospital and might need surgery on his arm.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the event or may have information that could help with their investigation to contact them on 101.
