Yanks Weekend: on the way over here...
Date published: 31 July 2015
SADDLEWORTH is getting set to step back in time once again fir the annual Yanks Weekend.
The event, on August 8 and 9, is based on the 1979 film “Yanks” which starred Richard Gere and Vanessa Redgrave and was shown in cinemas across the world. Many scenes were shot in Saddleworth, Stalybridge, Oldham, Stockport and Hyde.
In 2001, a small team of volunteers organised the first Yanks event in Uppermill. Since then it has grown to become one the biggest 1940s events in the region.
The main activity takes place at Saddleworth School, where there will be military vehicles, period stalls, dancing and a vintage tea room as well as a flyover from a Spitfire and a Hurricane.
The weekend’s highlight, the parade of military vehicles, will take place at noon on the Sunday.
