A special something

VISITORS to a new children’s play area will soon be able to enjoy a cradle swing, wooden climbing zones, a belt path and balance blocks.

The new attraction at Bullcote Park in Royton, being built in memory of Shaw gas-blast victim Jamie Heaton, is due to open on August 8.

At the heart of the area is a memorial stone. The Jamie’s Something Special team — which includes Jamie’s dad Kenny — has raised £37,000 in the three years since the tragedy.

Kenny (40) kickstarted work on the play area when he dug up the first mound of grass up at a special event.

The park’s theme focuses on Jamie’s love of frogs and there will be a trail from the park’s main entrance to draw people to the new area.

Royton Councillor Steve Bashforth said: “It’s only a small park but it’s a really beautiful one and this will be a great facility for families in the area. It’s something we can all be proud of.”
