SILENCE as absent at Oldham Library yesterday as BBC Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox introduced a live music show as part of the “Get It Loud In Libraries” event.
The TV and radio presenter introduced up-and-coming singer songwriter Misty Miller before the London-based performer and her band filled the bookcase aisles with music.
North-West-based Get It Loud In Libraries sees musicians plugging in their guitars and microphones at libraries across the region in a bid to attract more young people back into the library to use the services on offer.
The initiative is funded by the National Lottery and has recently been chosen as a finalist in the arts category of the National Lottery Awards.
Cox, originally from Bolton, said: “It is great to be part of Get It Loud In Libraries and Oldham Library is a stunning venue to host it. It’s a fantastic way of getting people to engage with their local library and hear some great music.
The former Radio 1 Breakfast Show host, who arrived with pet pooch Beano in tow, added: “Somebody here might even want my job one day!”
She added it was her first visit to Oldham - so she would be taking pictures to show fellow BBC radio DJ and Oldhamer Nick Grimshaw.
Sara also took part in a question and answer session with some of the media students.
Stewart Parsons, creative director of Get It Loud In Libraries, said: “The event has been a roaring success. We’re trying to change the perceptions some people have about libraries and get them back in and using the services on offer.”
Over the 10 years of the scheme once unknown acts such as Jessie J, Florence and the Machine, The Vaccines and Adele have taken part before rising to chart success.
